UVP SERIES UVP

DESCRIPTION: UVP is an NVP-Free, single-package UV ink system formulated for screen printing onto plastics and other various display substrates.

CHARACTERISTICS: UVP inks are designed for printing onto styrene, ABS, acrylic, top-coated polyesters, some pretreated polyolefins and coated paper.

PIGMENTS/LIGHTFASTNESS: UVP inks are available in C-Mix 2000 blending colors and 4 color process shades. If blended inks are mixed to contain high contents of white or clear, lightfastness is reduced.

CURING: Actual cure speeds will vary depending on ink-color, mesh, other printing parameters that affect ink-film thickness, and the actual U.V. curing unit used. Belt speeds as high as 80 ft/min (31 m/min), with two lamps at 200 watts/in. (80 watts/cm), can be achieved, dependent on these variables. Ink adhesion can only be achieved if the U.V. ink film is adequately cured. Substrates have differing receptivity to U.V. ink, and on certain rigid and/or colored materials it may be necessary to cure ink more effectively to achieve satisfactory adhesion.

MODIFICATION: UVP is a single-package ink which does not require the use of any additives under normal printing conditions. The following additives are available for modification:

ST-370 Cure Accelerator 1-5%

ST-374 Adhesion Promoter 1-3%

ST-375 Hardener 5%

ST-376 Thinner 3-10%

ST-377 Flow Promoter 1-2%

ST-378 Light Stabilizer 3-5%

Overdosage of these additives may cause problems during further processing and application.

BRONZE INKS: For bronze prints, UVP-E50 can be mixed with bronze paste and powders B75 to B79. Mixing ratios by weight are as follows:

Gold Bronze paste : UVP-E50 = 1 : 3-5
Silver Bronze paste : UVP-E50 = 1 : 3-5

Gold and silver bronzes are metal particles which react with the pH-acidic components. Therefore, mixed bronze inks should be processed quickly. Shelf-life is limited to 24 hours after mixed. Depending on the

bronze used, oxidative reactions may cause color changes (darker) or thickening of the mixed system due to catalytic effects. Although the binders contained in UV inks generally have good stability, they cannot be delivered pre-mixed with metallic pigments for the reasons above. Mixed bronze powders have a better storage than mixed bronze pastes. When printing metallic color shades, a 305/in. polyester fabric is necessary for adequate passage of the metallic particles.

NOTE: Pretest all metallic blends prior to use in production.

SCREEN MESH: 305-420/in.(120-165/cm) monofilament polyester mesh, or finer, is suitable for processing. It is possible to use coarser fabrics; however, the curing parameters must be adjusted for sufficient cross-linking of the increased ink film deposit.

SQUEEGEE: Sharp urethane squeegee of approximately 75-85 durometer

COVERAGE: When printed through a 381/in.(150/cm) twill-weave mesh, UVP will cover approx. 3000 square feet per gallon, depending on printing variables. Higher coverage can be achieved when finer mesh counts are used.

PROCESS COLORS: UVN-MP inks are recommended for 4 color process printing. These inks have the same versatile adhesion to many plastic substrates as UVP, and their rheology is better suited for holding dot structure. UMP-TPS Transparent base may be used to adjust density. As with all UV halftone printing, plain- weave mesh counts and thin stencil coatings should be used to minimize ink deposit, dot gain and other variables associated with 4 color process printing.

STORAGE: All UV inks should be stored in closed, black polyethylene containers at temperature below 90° F (32° C).

HEALTH AND SAFETY: UVP is formulated to be NVP-FREE. As with all inks, gloves and safety goggles should be used when handling this product. For more complete information, refer to the relevant Material Safety Data Sheets.
